Mouth Breathing, Dry Mouth, and Root Decay

Saliva helps protect teeth. Here are some conditions that can cause problems with keeping your mouth healthy.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth, or xerostomia, results from insufficient saliva production, causing discomfort and an increased risk of dental issues. It can stem from dehydration, medications, medical conditions, or aging. Managing dry mouth involves addressing underlying causes, staying hydrated, and, if necessary, using saliva substitutes.

Mouth Breathing

Mouth breathing, the habit of breathing through the mouth instead of the nose, can lead to health issues when chronic. Causes include nasal congestion, anatomy, or childhood habits. Prolonged mouth breathing may contribute to dry mouth, dental problems, and impact respiratory health.

Root Decay

Root decay, or root caries, is tooth decay affecting the roots near the gumline, common in older adults with receding gums. Exposed roots lack enamel protection, making them more susceptible to decay. Prevention includes good oral hygiene, regular dental check-ups, and addressing risk factors contributing to root decay.
