Laser dentistry is still making its way into the mainstream consumer knowledge of dentistry. Our patients in St. Petersburg, FL are constantly amazed at how laser dentistry can eliminate the need for that numbing shot for routine things like fillings and crown procedures.
There are a variety of different kinds of lasers used in laser dentistry. Each dental office makes decisions about what kinds of services they’d like to offer, what training and certification they will attain and what “make and model” of lasers they will need to purchase.
Our office capabilities include the use of a popular laser dentistry machine called a Waterlase. It uses a technique known as a HydroKinetic process. It combines water with the power of a laser to replace some of the disadvantages of a dental drill.
We can point the Waterlase where we would normally use a drill. The differences between using a dental drill and using the Waterlase are many:
Waterlase uses a beam of water and laser that removes tiny pieces of teeth, smaller than the size of a drill bit. This allows the dentist your to be more precise than usual when working on teeth.
The Waterlase generates no friction as it works. This eliminates a major cause of pain during dental procedures: heat.
Drills are notorious for creating tiny fractures in teeth as they go about spinning and drilling. These tiny fractures radiate away from the hold being drilled. Once filling is in place, the tiny fractures serve as a liability to the future health of the tooth. The laser creates no fractures. By having no fractures, it helps the tooth to remain healthier for a longer amount of time. It keeps the structure of the tooth more resistant to real cracks down the road.
The laser usually allows procedures like a filling to be performed without a numbing shot. Patients save time in the dentist chair because there is no waiting from a shot to take effect. Patients also leave the office with no need to deal with a numb lip back at work.
“With the laser as part of our solutions for patients, we have the ability to save then time and pain. This gets them back to work or the ball field sooner and with no numb lip,” says Dolphin Dental’s Maher Rashid, DMD.
